Ellis Island
Dear readers,
Today I am going to tell you about our visit to Ellis Island. First we went to see the Statue of Liberty and after that we took a ferry to Ellis Island. The Island is quite small, and we got to wonder around the immigration station on our own.
While looking around we were sent to find a few things. We had to find the Great Hall where all of the immigrants were processed. We also had to find something related to Finland and we discovered a map showing how many Finns had entered the United States and where they went after being allowed into the country.
Ellis Island is still considered a very
important part of the history of the United States. Millions of immigrants
arrived to the United States through Ellis Island. It was the place where the
authorities made sure that the people entering the country were healthy and
able to work. If you weren’t healthy, you were isolated from the others until
you recovered or passed away. We also saw some of the medical equipment that
was used during the examinations.
I liked the visit to Ellis Island, even
though we were already quite tired after seeing the Statue of Liberty. The
atmosphere there was a strange mix of sadness but also happiness and hope for
the people who were allowed to enter the U.S. The Great Hall was beautiful and
impressive. Overall visiting Ellis Island was an unforgettable experience. It
made me think about how difficult life must have been for those who were not
allowed to enter the country and how full of hope the others must have felt
when they finally got in.
