The Dakota

We arrived at the Dakota building on our tour around Manhattan. There, our guide told us that this is the place where John Lennon was shot on December 8th 1980. The murderer who lived in the same building had been waiting for Lennon to come back from his studio. After several
hours of waiting he saw Lennon walking back in and then he shot him. This tragedy shocked America and people compared it to the murder of John F. Kennedy in the 60's.

The building was designed back in 1884 by architect Henry J. Hardenbergh.
It is considered to be one of Manhattan's most prestigious and exclusive cooperative residential buildings. John Lennon bought the whole upper floor for his personal use in 1973. It is one of the most expensive buildings in Manhattan and has been growing in value since Lennon died.
The Dakota building was designated New York City Landmark in 1969 and can not be demolished.

The Dakota building
Also known as the Dakota apartments, the Dakota building was a very impressive building with beautiful architecture which stood out from the other structures around it with its old fashioned style. It is a 133-year-old building, after all. Dakota is located on the northwest corner of 72nd street and Central Park West in the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City. The building is known as John Lennon´s home and also the place where he was murdered. It was pretty odd and kind of sad to be at the very place where this tragedy happened more than 30 years ago. We also visited John Lennon´s memorial in the Strawberry fields nearby. The monument itself was pretty modest but the atmosphere there was special with sunshine and someone playing his songs on guitar. It was a nice place to visit.
