The Statue of Liberty

The View from the Pedestal by Kalle |
The Statue of Liberty is a statue portraying a woman
located on the Liberty Island. It was given to the U.S. as a gift by the people
of France, and after its dedication in 1886 it has served as a symbol of
freedom and welcomed millions of immigrants coming to the U.S. on ships between
the years 1886 and 1924.
Getting to the statue is possible by taking a ferry
from Manhattan. Tourists are allowed on the pedestal of the statue and also on
the crown, although there are quite a few restrictions on what kinds of groups
can visit the crown. Our group had tickets to the pedestal. We had to climb
quite a lot of stairs because we didn’t have time to wait in line for the
elevators. From the pedestal we got a beautiful view of Manhattan. To our luck
the day was sunny and the sky was clear, so enjoying the view was easy. I think
visiting the statue would be an important part of any trip to New York.
