Wall Street
Today, on the 4th day
of our trip we visited the 9/11 Memorial. On our lunch break we decided to
briefly visit the nearby Wall Street, as it was a place of high interest for me
and my friends. The street was surprisingly narrow and bafflingly decorative
neoclassical buildings towered over people walking down the street and cast
shadow to buildings below. It was quite disappointing that it was a Saturday
and the real time stock indexes weren’t shown on the screens as they are during
trading sessions. Wall Street is home to two of the world’s biggest stock
exchanges, calculated in market capitalization. The NYSE (New York Stock Exchange)
which has an offering of more tangible firms such as construction and banking
giants is physically located in Wall Street. The New York Nasdaq – the second
biggest stock exchange – features more intangible and immaterial
rights-dependent firms, such as the likes of Google and Facebook, and is only
namely located in Wall street, as it is an online only marketplace. The Nasdaq
is known for its growth stories that would make any 20th century
financier flabbergasted.
